WRITTEN AND DESIGNED BY EXPERT TEACHERS - Steven A. Fleming and Maitland Jones, Jr., have more than fifty years experience teaching organic chemistry. Both authors know how to get students to think about and understand each concept, and build student confidence in solving problems. The authors employ a conversational writing style that is authoritative, instructive, and interesting to read.
-
INNOVATIVE PEDAGOGY COACHES STUDENTS THROUGH THE TOUGH PARTS OF THE SUBJECT
-
At the beginning of each chapter, Essential Skills and Details outline what students need to master.
-
Problem-Solving boxes give students expert advice or insider tips on how to approach a type of problem.
-
Convention Alerts point out the rules students need to know in order to be successful.
-
At the end of each chapter the authors provide a useful Summary, which reviews theNew Concepts in the chapter, discusses the Reactions, Mechanisms, and Tools a student will need to know to be successful, and points out Common Errors made by beginning organic chemistry students.
-
A CONSISTENT FRAMEWORK HELPS STUDENTS VISUALIZE ORGANIC REACTIONS, UNDERSTAND WHY THEY OCCUR, AND PRACTICE DRAWING
Visualize, Understand, Draw boxes in the text focus on key skills and help students learn to visualize how molecules are formed, draw them well, and understand why reactions occur. Using this framework to solve problems, students begin to understand organic chemistry and memorize less.
-
MEDIA RESOURCES GIVE STUDENTS MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR VISUALIZATION
Organic Reaction Animations (ORA), now online, is a compilation of more than fifty organic reactions whose pathways have been calculated and animated to help students visualize the events that occur in the most important organic reactions. Each reaction is represented in four ways:
-
Ball-and-Stick model
-
Space-filling model
-
Ball-and-stick with the HOMO superimposed
-
Ball-and-stick with the LUMO superimposed
ORA is integrated into the text with icons identifying each reaction and also includes tutorials on the reactions themselves. Students can test their understanding by solving the ORA Problems that are found at the end of most chapters. Every new copy ofOrganic Chemistry, Fifth Edition, includes an access code to ORA.
In addition to ORA, students have free access to Orgo 3D web which is a website with more than 350 interactive, 3-D molecules from the text. Students can manipulate the 3-D diagrams in several ways—by rotating, coloring, zooming, labeling, and measuring angles and distances.

SMARTWORK ONLINE TUTORIAL AND HOMEWORK SYSTEM GIVES STUDENTS FEEDBACK AS THEY PRACTICE
Created by chemistry educators, SmartWork is the most intuitive online tutorial and homework system available for organic chemistry. A powerful engine supports and grades an unparalleled range of questions written for Jones/Fleming, including numerous arrow-pushing problems. Every one of the more than 2,100 problems in SmartWork have hints and answer-specific feedback to coach students and provide the help they need, when they need it. Problems in SmartWork link directly to the appropriate page in the electronic version of the text so students have an instant reference and are prompted to read.

REORGANIZED AND REVISED, WITH A FOCUS ON THE BASICS
In the Fifth Edition, new sections have been added to help students understand the basics, including a new arrow-pushing section in Chapter 1, a new section on functional groups in Chapter 2, and more on acid–base chemistry in Chapter 2. More than 20% of the problems in the text are new, including more “drill” problems throughout. A new chapter on biomolecules prepares students who plan to take the MCAT, and reflects changes that will occur with the MCAT2015.
