About the Cover
In the last 40 years. the largely unexplored marine environment has been recognized as a vast resource of unique compounds with novel chemical properties, but the challenges in discovering drug leads among such expansive biodiversity are many. Nonetheless, new compounds with useful bioactivity are routinely discovered and synthesized. Trabectedin, also known as ecteinascidin 743 or ET-743, is obtained from the sea squirt Ecteinascidia turbinata, and was synthesized in the laboratory of Nobel Laureate E.J. Corey In 1996. Sold under the trade name Yondelis, trabectedin was approved in the European Union in 2007 for the treatment of advanced soft tissue sarcoma. In 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved trabectedin for the treatment of specific soft tissue cancers that cannot be removed for surgery.
