Description
The most comprehensive introduction to Fourier transforms and their applications.

Fourier-related transforms are of critical importance in a wide variety of scientific, engineering and technology applications. Fourier-Related Transforms, Fast Algorithms and Applications is the first in a series of three texts that will present Fourier-related transforms, topics, and applications in unprecedented depth.
This book presents a unified framework for understanding continuous-time, discrete-time and discrete Fourier-related transforms. Once readers have mastered the fundamentals of Fourier transforms and series, it also covers these and other important topics:

  • One-sided and two-sided Laplace and z-transforms.
  • Correspondence between Fourier-related transforms, linear vector spaces and the method of least squares.
  • Applications in continuous-time and discrete-time linear time-invariant system analysis and filtering.
  • Fast algorithms for discrete Fourier-related transforms, with accompanying C and Fortran programs for the number of data points equal to a power of 2, or any number of data points.
  • Discrete-time convolutions.
  • Discrete-time correlations.
  • Toeplitz forms and their fast computations.

In the previous literature, Fourier-related transforms have been discussed primarily in terms of their complex formulations. This book gives equal weight to both complex and real-basis functions. By understanding real-basis function, practicing engineers can avoid many of the calculation problems that occur when complex-basis function formulations are used in applications such as digital filtering and signal/image processing.

This book presents many exercises and examples throughout, and also provides guidance on when to use each type of Fourier transform.

It will serve as an ideal textbook in courses involving signals, systems and signal processing, and for courses specifically intended to teach Fourier-related transforms. It will also serve as an ideal reference for professional engineers, physicists, and mathematicians.
OKAN ERSOY is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at Purdue University whose current interests include spectral methods, related parallel and fast algorithms, neural networks, digital signal/image processing and recognition, optical information processing, and diffractive optics. A former Fulbright Fellow, he has published approximately 140 papers and holds three patents. He is a senior member of the IEEE, a member of the Optical Society of America and of the Society for Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.
